Ukraine said it carried out a drone strike on an oil pumping station located roughly 1,500 kilometers inside Russian territory, near the Ural Mountains. The operation marks a further escalation in Kyiv’s strategy of targeting critical infrastructure beyond its borders.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strike as part of a new phase in Ukraine’s military capabilities, particularly regarding the growing range of its weapons systems. He emphasized that Ukraine intends to continue extending the reach of its operations, increasing pressure on key Russian assets.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified attacks on energy-related targets, including refineries, storage facilities, and ports. These efforts are aimed at weakening one of Russia’s main sources of war funding, especially as global oil prices remain elevated.
Ukrainian officials indicated that the targeted facility plays a strategic role in oil distribution, supplying multiple routes, including key refineries. Russian authorities acknowledged a fire at an industrial site in the region, although full details about the extent of the damage remain unclear.
Kyiv has also claimed that its long-range strikes are affecting Russia’s oil exports. According to Ukrainian data, there have been noticeable declines in throughput at major ports such as Primorsk, Ust-Luga, and Novorossiysk. However, industry sources suggest that overall shipment volumes have remained relatively stable so far.
The increase in these operations highlights a shift in the dynamics of the conflict, with Ukraine demonstrating an enhanced ability to strike deep inside Russian territory. Since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine says it has significantly expanded the range of its offensive capabilities.
Russia has condemned the attacks, describing them as strikes on civilian infrastructure. At the same time, Russian forces continue targeting Ukraine’s energy systems, in a war that has already resulted in thousands of civilian casualties.
Analysts warn that the expansion of long-range strikes could have significant military and economic consequences, placing additional pressure on Russia’s logistics and energy sectors. However, the move also raises the risk of further escalation, contributing to an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape.
